Cheap Aeroflot Flights
Aeroflot is the national airline of Russia (its full name is Aeroflot – Russian Airlines) and is also the country’s biggest airline. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union, it was the Soviet Union’s national airline and was, at one time, the largest airline in the entire world. Aeroflot’s base is at Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow, Russia The airline flies to more than 90 destinations in nearly 50 countries. The route network is particularly heavy in Asia and throughout Europe, though Aeroflot also flies to two African countries, the United States, Canada and (of course) Cuba.
In the early 1990s Aeroflot was concentrating mostly on the international market, but with the rise of smaller regional carriers throughout Russia, the airline began putting more efforts into the domestic market again in the late 1990s and into the 2000s. Aeroflot will be getting its own terminal at Moscow’s airport in late 2007.
Aeroflot’s ability to fly to the United States was suspended by the US on several occasions between 1979 and 1986, often based on the US government’s reaction to a Soviet military operation. With the demise of the Soviet Union, Aeroflot was divided into more than 500 regional carriers – some of which became the flag carriers for newly independent countries. When they were first created, these airlines were sometimes called “Babyflots.”
Aeroflot is a member of the SkyTeam airline alliance.
