Icelandair is the flag carrier of Iceland. It is based at Reykjavík Airport in the capital of Reykjavík. The airline operates services to 25 cities in 12 countries. The airline’s hub is Keflavík International Airport (KEF) , also known as also known as Reykjavík-Keflavík Airport.
The airline traces its roots to 1937 when Flugfélag Akureyrar was founded. Three years later, the company moved its headquarters to Reykjavík and changed its name to Flugfélag Íslands. In 1945 the airline made its first international flights: to Scotland and Denmark. In 1973, the company’s English name became Icelandair. In 1996, the airline entered into an interline and marketing agreement with low-fare carrier, Southwest Airlines , which allowed the American company to carry passengers to Europe (however, the agreement was later terminated). In 1997 it established a subsidiary, Air Iceland, to operate domestic and selected short-haul routes.
The airline’s in-flight magazine, Icelandair Info, is printed four times a year (both in English and Icelandic). It is also the catalog for Saga Shop, which features Icelandair products and services as well as other articles including things to do, stories and profiles. There’s also an in-flight entertainment system, which includes on-demand movies and television episodes.
The cabin is divided into three classes: Economy, Economy Comfort and Saga (equivalent to business). Icelandair is the only airline which offers a la carte service on trans-atlantic routes.
Icelandair has codeshare agreements with Alaska Airlines, Finnair and SAS .
