How to Find Cheap Air Travel to/from Baltimore

People flying into Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (airport code BWI) might just be evenly split between those who are heading to Baltimore and those who are heading to Washington D.C. But not everyone flying into the US capital is flying into BWI (as it is commonly called) – there are three major airports serving D.C. Since BWI lies northeast of Washington D.C., it might be a good option if you are not actually visiting the capital – but it is also a fine choice for a visit to D.C. as well.

BWI Airport is in the unincorporated area of Linthicum in Maryland, and it is a major focus city for Southwest Airlines. Although it is one of the three airports which does technically serve Washington D.C., the other two airports are closer to the city than BWI so there is not the large number of airlines using it as a hub that you might otherwise expect. There are also not many international airlines using BWI. British Airways is one that does have service to BWI. The airport does seem to attract budget airlines, however, like Southwest.

You can find a complete list of all the airlines serving Baltimore/Washington here, and track arrivals here and departures here. There are two terminal maps (in PDF) – one for the upper level here, and one for the lower level here. The maps each have lists of what is available where, including restaurants and shops. You will find driving directions from several different cities on the BWI website – these are the directions for Washington D.C., and the rest of the cities are listed along the left side of the page. Similarly, there are many options for ground transportation once you arrive at BWI. This is the information for the light rail system, and the rest of your options – including airport shuttle, bus and taxi – are listed at the top of the page. If you are driving to the airport, you can save time and money by booking your Baltimore airport parking in advance.

The Baltimore and Washington D.C. area is also served by Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).
