How to Find Cheap Air Travel to/from New Orleans
Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (airport code MSY) lies primarily in the city of Kenner, Louisiana and is a scant four feet above sea level, but is the only world’s second lowest lying international airport (Schiphol in The Netherlands sits 11 feet below sea level). New Orleans’ airport is about 11 miles from the central business district of the city of New Orleans. Prior to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, MSY (which got its code from its original name, Moisant Field) served almost 10 million passengers every year. In 2009, it served almost 8 million passengers, while in 2010 it served little over 8 million passengers. While New Orleans is not a hub for any airline, Southwest Airlines maintains a large presence at the airport. As of late 2010, AirTran started a new daily nonstop service to Milwaukee. United also re-started the daily nonstop service to San Francisco. International scheduled service has also returned to New Orleans. There is now direct service to Mexico City, Cancun, Toronto, as well as to destinations in the Caribbean.
