More Information on Vilnius

Lithuania’s capital is historically an ethnically diverse city, and today is home to large Polish and Russian communities. The Republic of Lithuania, occupied by many other countries over the years, has existed since 1991 as we know it today. Vilnius is gearing up for 2009, when it will be the capital of the European Culture, and the city’s historical center and its main monuments are being restored. It’s only fitting, as the geographical center of Europe lies a mere 25 km north of Vilnius in the town of Purnuskes.

In addition to the many 13th-century buildings in Vilnius’ old town, the city is also home to the only statue in the world of the late musician Frank Zappa.
